The New Year is here, and I wish you a joyful and prosperous 2023.
Many people are excited about the new year and have started making resolutions or creating goals. But some of you may feel somewhat unsettled, unmotivated, or even scattered.
If that’s so, I have a short exercise for you to complete the last year so that you can feel free from whatever happened in 2022 and start fresh.
- Every year, I go through these questions to end a chapter called “the last year”:
- What did I accomplish this year (personally and professionally)?
- What did I intend to accomplish that I didn’t?
- How did I grow and develop this year (e.g., new or expanded capacities, better at intervening in patterns that no longer serve me and others, etc.)?
- What do I regret?
- What am l angry about?
- What am I grateful for?
- Who is there to acknowledge and appreciate their contribution?
Once I have thoroughly answered these questions, I will pause for at least a few days before creating my next chapter. Then I can create the next chapter for the new year from a place of clarity rather than a reaction.
And, instead of looking at what “goals” you will achieve this year, I invite you to ask yourself the following question: What will you put your attention to?
You can imagine the attention being like water and what is getting watered that will (very likely) grow. It’s almost impossible not to succeed in any area of your life as long as you give it time and attention.
